What to see on Statia
Thinks you can see and do on Statia
The Island
Encounter a tropical forest filled with wild orchids and fruit trees on a hike around the Quill, an extinct volcano. Visit the lush showcase of Statia's fauna and flora at Miriam C. Schmidt Botanical Garden, or wander around the cliffs of Fort Oranje, built in 1636.
The Ocean
Sint Eustatius’ calling card is the ocean. Its uniquely steep volcanic topography and deep shelves around the island make it a premier diving location for for first-time divers as well as experts.
The strict biodiversity regulations ensure that wildlife – like sea turtles, barracuda, stingrays, squirrel fish, and reefs – always thrive.
There are 36 dive sites around Sint Eustatius, including over a dozen 18th-century shipwrecks, a Taiwanese fishing vessel and natural formations due to volcanic activity from the dormant Quill.
Snorkeling isn't as robust as diving, but there's still ample opportunity to enjoy Sint Eustatius' underwater inhabitants. Depart from Oranjestad Bay (opposite Bay Path), where the water is calmer and there's no need to hire a boat.
Hiking
Venture into the crater of the Quill, a dormant volcano. Take a break at the base of one of the tallest trees in the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Overlook the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea at the top of Boven Mountain. Discover untouched nature in our two national parks.
